Channels like Nathaniel Drew and Matti Haapoja build an entire room-tone bed underneath the voiceover — barely audible drone or ambience — and only sparse whooshes on visual transitions. The sound design feels invisible until you mute it. In Resolve, this means dedicating track A3 to ambience set around -28dB, and using SFX on A2 maybe twice per minute.

The Documentary Style

Long-form documentary YouTube uses sound as structural punctuation, not constant texture. A subtle riser into a heavy impact hit at the start of every new chapter. Group SFX into a bus. Apply 4:1 compressor at -18dB threshold. Set bus output to about -22dB so SFX sits beneath voiceover.

On Deliver, pick the YouTube 4K H.264 preset. AAC audio at -16 LUFS. Render queue handles the rest.

How do I add sound effects to DaVinci Resolve?
